Gordon G. Knight, the father of Little People, Big World star Amy Roloff, died on October 5, 2026, at the age of 97. His death has brought sadness to his family and loved ones, who remember a man whose long life was marked by dedication, ingenuity, humor and a deep commitment to those around him.

Knight, who lived in Dexter Township, Michigan, passed away at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. News of his death became public on October 26, when his grandson Jacob Roloff shared a heartfelt tribute reflecting on his grandfather’s life and the memories they shared.

In his tribute, Jacob described a grandfather who could initially seem intimidating but had a softer, affectionate side that became apparent through his smile and wink. He recalled visiting his grandparents in Michigan as a child and later making time to see Gordon during the final years of his life.

Jacob also remembered his grandfather as someone who remained active and curious well into old age. Just months before his death, Gordon was still cleaning his muzzleloaders and driving his Corvette. His grandson admired the way he continued to stay engaged with life, maintain relationships, read and embrace new experiences.

One of the memories Jacob particularly valued was sitting with his grandfather on the deck. He also expressed regret that he had not asked Gordon more questions about his experiences during the Korean War, a period of his life he rarely discussed.

Born on January 1, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, Gordon was the son of Charles and Eveline Knight. He served in the Korean War before building a long professional career as a civil and structural engineer with Ford Motor Company, where he worked for 30 years before retiring.

Beyond his engineering career, Gordon enjoyed activities that connected him with history and the outdoors. He was a member of the Ottawa Long Rifle group, and he and his wife participated in historical reenactments and attended national rendezvous events. The couple also spent time in Moran Township in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where they enjoyed the natural surroundings of a cabin they built on Lake Michigan.

Faith and community were important parts of Gordon’s life. He was a member and lay leader at North Lake United Methodist Church and enjoyed the fellowship of the congregation. He was also associated with American Legion Post 419 in Pinckney, Michigan.

Gordon was remembered for his witty sense of humor, generosity and ability to create, build and persevere. His obituary described a man who approached life with curiosity and resourcefulness, leaving a positive impression on the people fortunate enough to know him.

He was married to Patricia A. Knight, who preceded him in death. Together, they raised their family and welcomed generations of children and grandchildren. Gordon occasionally appeared alongside his daughter Amy on the TLC reality series Little People, Big World, giving viewers a glimpse of the family’s life beyond the television spotlight.

Gordon is survived by his children, Kathryn Briceland and her husband, John; Amy Roloff-Marek and her husband, Chris; and Roger Knight and his wife, Sarah. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and his sister, Joan Finch. His daughter Cynthia R. Norwood and his wife, Patricia, preceded him in death.

Following news of his passing, Amy expressed her sadness and reflected on the family memories she would continue to cherish. Jacob’s tribute also highlighted the importance of the time he had spent reconnecting with his grandfather in recent years.

Gordon Knight’s life spanned nearly a century, encompassing military service, decades of engineering work, family milestones and enduring friendships. His legacy lives on through the generations he helped shape and the many people whose lives he touched.

A memorial service is scheduled for January 5, 2027, at North Lake United Methodist Church in Chelsea, Michigan, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. and the service at noon.

As family and friends remember Gordon, he will be cherished for his humor, generosity, resilience and continued curiosity about the world around him. Though he lived to 97, his loss leaves a meaningful absence for those who loved him.

May Gordon G. Knight rest in peace, and may his family find comfort in the memories and legacy he leaves behind.
